National Energetics is a leading innovator in the design, construction, and commercialization of high-energy lasers and laser systems. These systems include lasers based on Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) with peak powers from 1 Terawatt to above a Petawatt as well as high-energy and high-average-power pulsed laser systems.

National Energetics, based in Austin, Texas, is currently considering applications for the position of Mechanical Engineer.

Summary:

We are seeking exceptional candidates to join the National Energetics mechanical engineering team. This mechanical engineer would be responsible for the design and development of precision mechanical and opto-mechanical hardware for large laser systems including the world’s highest peak-power laser (10 Petawatts) currently under development. Typical design projects include, but are not limited to, laser amplifiers, large-aperture optic mounts, motion control systems, vacuum chambers and systems, and thermal management systems. The candidate would be responsible for specific projects throughout the entire development process; concept, design and analysis, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, assembly, installation, and commissioning.

Qualifying Background:

B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
At least 4 years of experience relating to opto-mechanical design and/or precision mechanism design
Extensive SolidWorks 3D modeling and 2D drafting experience
Experience with tolerance analysis and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Expertise in materials, finishing techniques, and mechanical part fabrication processes
Experience with design troubleshooting and metrology
Fundamental understanding of optics and optical terminology
Clear understanding of opto-mechanical design tradeoff considerations
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary R&D environment with scientists and engineers
Experience developing and testing prototypes
Ability to manage complex design projects from concept to installation
Good communication skills as a subject matter expert
Self-starter with commitment to excellence
Additional Valuable Background:

Opto-mechanical design experience on systems with large optics
Knowledge of optical specifications and coatings
Expertise in precision motorized mechanism design and motion control
Design of mechanisms for in-vacuum operation
Vacuum chamber and vacuum equipment design
Static and dynamic analysis utilizing FEA
Thermal analysis utilizing CFD
Familiarity with operating principles and safety considerations of laser systems
Experience working in a clean room environment
Experience designing High-Voltage equipment
